About Company

Jupiter Hydro is a renewable energy power production technology development company focused on commercializing proprietary helical turbines for harvesting energy from tidal flows, rivers, spillways and ocean currents.

Jupiter is currently working closely with EMEC (the European Marine Energy Center) and we are rapidly moving forward with the design and engineering stages for the 2EB1255 model with the intention of deploying it at the EMEC test site. The 2EB1255 is our first 1 MW commercial  prototype.

Our eventual  goal is to deploy this unit as part of the 398 MW MeyGen Project in northern Scotland.

The structural parts of the design have gone through the early design process and estimates have been received from manufacturers in Scotland that fit into our budget with no problem. Currently the electrical and mechanical systems are moving into the detailed design phase.

Here is the 3D rendering of our 2EB1255 design.

Vision And Immediate Opportunity

Jupiter Hydro's vision is to create energy that does not cost the earth, by providing environment friendly electricity that can be created close to where it is consumed or conducted to the closest existing grid.

One of the largest tidal developers in the world introduced Jupiter to the European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC) in Scotland, the largest and most recognised tidal test site in the world. This center is the ideal place where Jupiter can prove their claim of being the most cost effective tidal technology in the world.

Once Jupiter proves it's economics and commercial viability, it will be the first choice of most of the Tidal Developers. As it turns out, EMEC has a grid connected site which Jupiter can occupy and at the same time get a 20 year power purchase agreement at over 60 cents/kWh. This is enough to pay for the new turbine over time. THIS IS THE BREAKTHROUGH WE HAVE BEEN SEEKING TO FIND.  Jupiter will have the attention of all the major developers at a time that none of them have committed to the technology they will use. The 398 MW MeyGen Project is in the process of developing the first 12 MW over the next three years and they have chosen to use three different technologies, clearly indicating that they have not chosen the technology for the remaining 386 MW.

In the process of proving the 2EB1255 at the EMEC centre, Jupiter will also be able to prove that it is 1/5th the cost of the 3 technologies being tried out in the first 12 MW at MeyGen. To explain further, please look at the attached up to date Executive Summary and the attached document on Tidal Power Developments in Scotland. These show a pathway to a great opportunity to be the GO TO Technology worldwide. The Executive Summary also gives a list of the 33 countries we are currently patented in.

Global Scenario

The in-stream hydrokinetic industry is just now beginning to move into major commercial applications. In the tidal industry, developers will begin to deploy technologies beginning in 2018. As far as one can tell in 2015, there are over 2000 MW of developments in permitting stages. There is less in terms of large developments permitted for rivers at this point. Some technology developments started as far back as 25 years ago; therefore it has been a slow growing business. This is largely due to the difficulty of placing large, wired devices down in dirty salt water that is constantly moving. It is only more recently that some technology developers have decided to find a way to harvest this energy from floating pontoon-type devices. This has been Jupiter's focus from the beginning and because of our simplicity, we are determined to prove we are the most cost effective technology in the world. Because you can currently get a 20 year power purchase agreement at 3.05 pounds/MWh from the UK Government, the tidal industry is taking off. After Jupiter proves it's technology commercially, it will be in high demand because the simplest and most cost effective will be the one most used. These rates will drop over time and again, the most cost effective will be the one most used.

This process will be similar with river, spillway and ocean current applications. Jupiter's technology is perfectly adaptable to all of these applications simply because of it's Lego-like nature.

Key competitive advantages are:

1) Jupiter's planned technololgy is simpler than other technologies and far more adaptable in that it can be floating or submerged.

2) The Jupiter technology is less prone to damage from debris than any other technology simply because most debris simply rolls right on through the screw along with the water flow.

3) The fastest flowing water in any tidal or river flow is at or very close to the surface. This is where the Jupiter technology captures the flow. As an example, at the FORCE tidal test site in the Bay of Fundy, a turbine placed on the sea floor will make less than 1/3 the power of the same turbine positioned just below the surface. Therefore, a Jupiter turbine is not only a way less costly to deploy when comparing the same area of turbine as a competitor, in many cases it will produce up to 3 times as much power.

4) Our system can be deployed in remote areas or in entire nations not having a national transmission grid, bringing electricity to villages along rivers, work camps, mines and mobile army bases using low cost micro-grid connectivity.

5) Potential environmental benefits are substantial. One MW of Jupiter installed “nameplate capacity” turbine will generate greenhouse gas (GHG) savings of 3,500 tonnes per annum (tpa) of CO2.
