Interstate Waste Services (IWS)

505 Cozine Avenue , Brooklyn, New York, United States

Recognition for Sustainable Design

Our parent company, the Action Environmental Group has been recognized by leading environmental and “green” organizations in the metropolitan New York area, is a founding member of Global Green’s CORR and a member of the Green Committee of the Manhattan Chamber of Commerce.Action has been cited by the New York Times in an article about the efforts of private trash haulers to create cleaner air. In the article, our CEO, Ron Bergamini, outlined Action’s support of New York City’s efforts to update the air pollution control code and Action’s commitment to reducing emissions. “With or without legislation, we support cleaner emissions for our industry.” Mr. Bergamini also noted “Action has plans underway to replace 50% of our 80 trucks by 2020.”We’re proud to note that Action Environmental Group has received recognition at the Global Green Sustainable Design 14th Annual Awards for the opening of our state-of-the-art material recovery center in the Bronx, which has empowered us to significantly increase the volume and diversity of materials we recycle citywide.

We are one of the few environmental services and waste management companies to have a full-time safety director on staff, demonstrating our commitment to employee and customer safety.

  • We reduce and eliminate incidents and potential issues through extensive, ongoing training and education for our employees
  • Every member of our team understands that a dedication to safety is part of their personal mission and a pillar of our corporate best practices
  • We hold monthly safety meetings to review and update rules and practices and instill our safety commitment to every IWS employee
  • Our company wide Action IWS “Yellow Campaign” demonstrates our safety focus – you’ll see the decal on each of our trucks

Recycling

  • Recycling is the cornerstone of Interstate Waste Services’ commitment to environmental protection. It’s also an important service we offer to all our customers, whether large, small, industrial, retail, commercial, institutional or construction.
  • IWS environmental consultants work with customers to make their recycling efforts as effective as possible.
  • We maintain up-to-date information on federal, state and local guidelines to ensure that IWS services are provided in complete compliance with these ever changing guidelines.

Recycling Cardboard and Plastic

  • Recycling cardboard only takes 75% of the energy needed to make new cardboard.
  • Recycling 1 ton of cardboard saves 46 gallons of oil.
  • Over 90% of all products shipped in the US are shipped in corrugated boxes, which totals more than 400 billion square feet of cardboard.
  • Nearly 80% of all retailers and grocers recycle their cardboard.
  • Five plastic bottles (PET) recycled provides enough fiber to create one square feet of carpet or enough fiber fill to fill one ski jacket.
  • Americans throw away 2.5 million plastic bottles every hour.
  • Recycling one ton of plastic bottles saves the equivalent energy usage of a two person household for one year.

An Award-Winning Material Recovery Facility

Along with local Material Recovery Facilities, IWS is now able to utilize an award winning MRF of our parent company, the Action Environmental Group. The future of waste management lies in recycling and green initiatives. At Action’s state-of-the-art Material Recovery Facility (MRF), we engage in the automated processing of paper, cardboard, glass, plastic, and aluminum. Our team has decades of experience in operating facilities and the innovative Bronx site is one of the most modern and efficient in the metropolitan area. Today, we keep more and more materials out of landfills through greater efficiency and leading-edge technology.Operating a facility of this type affords the Action Environmental Group the opportunity to remove any recyclable material from the waste stream prior to disposal. In addition to preserving landfill capacity, this process assists in our continuing efforts to control overall costs for our customers.

In early 2014, this facility received recognition at the Global Green Sustainable Design 14th Annual Awards for increasing recycling of valuable materials citywide. On site, we have installed an advanced new technology: the RedWave NIR/C. This is an optical sorting machine that recognizes and separates the material and the color in only one step. Different kinds of material, like colored printed and not printed cardboard, catalogues, newspapers, magazines, plastics, etc. can be identified by Near Infrared. There is a big advantage in the separation of brown and gray cardboard due to the additional color sensors. Our facility is the only one of its kind in the region, and possibly the country.
