Benfield Sanitation Services was founded in 1958 by James Benfield, the father of current owner, Jeff Benfield.  BSS started as one man and one truck doing residential pickup in Iredell County and today has grown to over 50 employees with operations in 10 counties and 38 cities.  Celebrating more than 50 years of continuous and dedicated solid waste service says a lot about who we are.

The recycling Division of BSS has grown tremendously since the early days when our major focus was providing cardboard collection service to commercial clients. In 2010, we contracted with our first municipal recycling customer to offer city-wide, single stream curbside collection services. Residents are provided with a 95-gallon rollout cart which is collected by our fully automated, side load truck, further increasing the efficiency of our services.
Benfield Sanitation Services opened our Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) under the name Iredell Recycling, LLC in Mooresville, NC during September of 2011. The state of the art 30000 square foot facility is situated on 6.5 acres which allows for future expansion of approximately 22,000 square feet of processing and storage space.
The facility currently employs 10 people and is capable of processing up to 63,000 tons of single-stream recyclables per year. Materials which are accepted and processed by the MRF are plastic containers #1-7, aluminum and steel cans, newspapers, magazines, cardboard, mixed paper, plastic film and glass. With the potential for future expansion of our operations, we are exploring the possibility of adding other materials such as e-waste, wood pallets and aggregates to our recycling list.The construction of the MRF with its high-tech processing equipment, will enable us to increase both our collection and processing capacity, as well as more efficiently sort single-stream recyclables from our customers.

Recycling Collection

The average person generates almost 1 ton of trash a year, but all that waste doesn’t have to go to the landfill. BSS offers a convenient service, Single Stream (also known as “co-mingled”) recycling refers to a system that allows our customers to deposit certain paper, cardboard, plastics, glass and metals into a single rollout cart or commercial dumpster without being separated. The fully commingled recyclables are then collected and taken to our 30000 square foot, state of the art Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) in Mooresville, NC where they are sorted and processed for reuse.

Commercial & Industrial Services

BSS offers multiple solutions to meet your waste disposal needs, from front loader dumpsters to large commercial compactors and Roll-off containers, we will work with you to make sure you have the service best suited for your business. We provide trash and recycling services to thousands of customers in all lines of business with pickup schedules ranging from daily, weekly, monthly or on an on-call basis. Customer service is our number one priority at BSS, when you call our office you’ll speak directly with our professional and friendly staff who are eager to assist you.

Construction Services

At BSS we understand the importance of on-time and on-call delivery and pick-ups. We’ll work with your job foreman to establish a program designed to meet your construction schedule and sustainability goals. Roll-off dumpsters are available in 12, 20, 30 and 40 cubic yard capacities with scheduled or on-call pickups available.Portable toilets are available for both short and long term projects, our units are professionally cleaned, sanitized and chemically restored on a pre-arranged schedule.
