Community

No one knows the needs of a community better than those who live and work in it. At IESI, our philosophy of local managerial empowerment allows our site managers to give back to their communities in ways that best meet the needs of their communities. This location-specific approach to good corporate citizenship results in a kaleidoscope of outreach programs, contributions and support that serve to benefit thousands of people across our service region.

Encouraging Economic Growth

Our waste facilities encourage economic vitality and growth in our community through more than contributions. Throughout the IESI service region, our company purchases goods and services locally, we employ local people, and we contribute to the local tax base. We also belong to our local chambers of commerce, and sponsor many events that promote the economy. Our facility provides host community benefits that lower residential taxes and provide for municipal capital improvements.

Giving Back

Giving back to our local community is part of doing business for IESI. One of the most vital groups served by our donations is our emergency service organizations. Our facilities help provide equipment, gear, and vehicles for our local fire, police and sheriff’s departments.

Another area of vital importance for our giving is the children of our communities. IESI believes in our children, and we support them with scholarships and we sponsor many educational and sports programs.  We also donate annually to the Make a Wish Foundation and Women in Need.

Last, but certainly not least, in the area of giving are the local services and community organizations that benefit from our financial backing. We believe that investing in service organizations, such as the Rotary Club and the local library system will bring great returns to our communities. We also believe that supporting the myriad of local community organizations that come to us for help will make our neighborhoods better places in which to live and work.

Commitment to Safety

The Health and Safety of every employee is a fundamental consideration in every business decision and plan, and all reasonable precautions will be taken to protect employees from injury and illness. We are committed to protect the public, company property, and our customers from events, which could cause harm or economic losses due to our operations.

Our goal is to prevent the occurrence of all work-related injuries, illnesses and property losses. It is our philosophy that, by striving to eliminate unsafe conditions and actions, we will achieve this goal.

Our environmentally friendly system

Landfills: Highly Engineered

Our environmental standards begin with the design and construction of the site. It is sealed like a vault with various liners, clay and/or synthetic, to protect the surrounding land, water and air. Collection systems are installed at the base of the landfill to collect and remove any water that reaches the liner system. As the landfill develops, gas recovery systems are installed to control the methane that is naturally produced as organic waste decomposes.

Landfill Gas-to-Energy

We have invested in waste-to-energy technologies which converts methane gas produced in a landfill to electricity. Conversion of methane reduces greenhouse emissions while making a positive contribution to energy production.

Our Seneca Meadows Landfill has created a 200-acre “Renewable Resource Park” that builds on the resources created by the landfill’s 17 megawatt landfill gas-to-energy facility. Our plan is to build more gas-to-energy facilities as our landfills continue to develop.

Our landfill sites provide an environmentally safe and economical way to manage the non-hazardous, solid waste generated within the community. We strive to find new and innovative methods to use at our facilities to further benefit the community.
